Our Story & Milestones
WE Chem’s journey is rooted in over two decades of entrepreneurial vision, industry expertise, and long-standing partnerships. Founded in 2002 by Uwe Marburger and Volker Windhoevel, the company was built on the belief that chemical distribution can – and should – be different: customer-focused, reliable, and driven by true collaboration. From the early days as Arpadis Deutschland GmbH to the rebranding as WE Chem International, our mission has remained the same: delivering more than just chemicals – building trust, quality, and partnership.
Over the years, we have continuously evolved: with our ISO certifications, the strategic partnership with DOW, and the move to our new headquarters in Velen. Most recently, our commitment to sustainability and responsibility was reaffirmed through our membership in the German Chemical Distribution Association (VCH) and the global Responsible Care initiative. Each milestone marks a step forward in our WEvolution – a path shaped by integrity, performance, and a clear focus on the future.
2002
Foundation
WE Chem’s story began in 2002 when Uwe Marburger and Volker Windhoevel (our two current Managing Directors) founded the company (originally as Arpadis Deutschland GmbH in Essen, Germany). From day one, their vision was to create a different kind of chemical distribution company focused on customer service and partnership.
2008
Quality Certification
As early adopters of rigorous quality standards, we achieved ISO 9001 certification in 2008. This milestone underscored our commitment to quality management and continual improvement – a commitment that carries on today with our ISO 9001:2015 certified status.
2010
Strategic Partnership with DOW
After the acquisition of Rohm and Haas by DOW, WE Chem continued its role as a trusted distribution and service partner for acrylate and methacrylate monomers. This collaboration strengthened our access to high-performance materials and reinforced our position as a reliable supplier to the coatings, adhesives, and resins industries across Europe.
2020
New Headquartes
In August 2020, we opened our new state-of-the-art headquarters in Velen, Germany. This modern facility was built to support future growth and innovation, reflecting our investment in better infrastructure to serve our partners across Europe more effectively.
2021
WE Chem is Born
At the start of 2021, the company rebranded from its original name to WE Chem International GmbH, marking the “birth” of the WE Chem identity. This change represented the unity of our team (“WE”) and our forward-looking evolution as a company – the beginning of the WEvolution era.
2023
Commitment to Responsibility
In 2023, WE Chem became a member of the German Chemical Distribution Association (Verband Chemiehandel, VCH) and officially joined the global Responsible Care initiative. This step underscores our ongoing commitment to safety, sustainability, and responsible business practices – values that are deeply rooted in our company culture and align with the WE Chem do better philosophy.

WE Chem International is independently owned and managed by its two founders, Uwe Marburger and Volker Windhoevel. As Managing Directors, they continue to lead the company with hands-on commitment and strategic vision. With decades of experience in the chemical distribution industry, they have shaped a company culture defined by trust, agility, and long-term partnerships. With a strong background in international trade and chemical distribution, Uwe Marburger brings strategic foresight and deep market understanding to WE Chem. As co-founder and Managing Director, he focuses on supplier relations, international sourcing, and business development. His clear thinking and calm leadership help guide long-term decisions — always with an eye on stability, reliability, and growth.

Volker Windhoevel combines operational expertise with a keen sense for customer needs and quality management. As co-founder and Managing Director, he oversees key customer relationships, service processes, and internal operations.
