Solvents

Styrene – a versatile building block for coatings and composites

Solvents are essential for processing and formulating specialty chemicals, enabling the appropriate viscosity, mixing, and application of coatings, paints, and adhesives. WE Chem offers key solvents and monomers that serve dual roles as reactive components in polymers. For example, Styrene Monomer – available in industrial and EBSM grades – is not only a fundamental monomer for polystyrene and ABS plastics, but also a reactive solvent (diluent) in unsaturated polyester resin systems. In fiberglass composites and coatings, styrene lowers resin viscosity for easier application and then co-polymerizes into the matrix, imparting toughness and chemical resistance. Its role as an essential co-reactant in polyester and vinyl ester resins makes styrene a cornerstone solvent for the coatings and composites industry.

By supplying Styrene Monomer in high-purity industrial and EBSM grades, WE Chem ensures consistent quality and reliability – tailored to meet your application needs.

styrene monomer

CAS: 100-42-5

Main Applications: Plastics Manufacturing (predominantly used to produce polystyrene plastics and copolymers like ABS, SAN – found in packaging, consumer goods, etc.), Fiber-reinforced Composites (acts as a reactive solvent in unsaturated polyester and vinyl ester resins for fiberglass, e.g. boat hulls, pipes, automotive and construction parts) and Synthetic Rubber (used in making SBR rubber for tires and industrial rubber products). Styrene is also occasionally used as a reactive diluent in certain adhesive and coating formulations, but its primary use is as a monomer for polymers in plastics and resins.
